Diabetes Is Increasing In Younger Population Doctors Share Early Signs

Diabetes Symptoms:According to a study published in ‘The BMJ’, the disease of diabetes is slowly gripping the youth of most of the youth. The survey of 204 countries found that the incidence of type 2 diabetes among young adults (aged 15 to 39) increased by 56% from 1990 to 2019. While high body mass index was the most contributing risk factor, air pollution was found to be another major risk factor. It was also found that women were more likely to have early type 2 diabetes. The results of the study draw our attention to the alarming situation that is the rising incidence of diabetes in the young population.

What causes diabetes in young adults?

For the past two decades, diabetes has been on the rise among young adults, those below 40 years of age, says Dr Ramesh Goyal, Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad. Doctors say that the main causes of diabetes in young adults are genetics, lack of physical activity and increased mental stress. If one of a young adult’s parents has diabetes, their chances of developing diabetes are 40 percent; if both parents have a history of diabetes, their chances of developing it increase to 50 percent. In addition, lifestyle-related factors such as consumption of high-calorie diet, minimal physical activity and stress can lead to diabetes in young adults (both men and women).

Early symptoms of diabetes seen in young people

Dr Goyal says that early symptoms of diabetes in young people include unexpected weight loss, increased frequency of urination and increased appetite. They have talked about other symptoms like genital infections, weakness and fatigue. One of the other early symptoms in men is erectile dysfunction. Common symptoms of diabetes that one needs to watch out for are: frequent urination, increased thirst, weight loss without trying, uncontrollable hunger, blurred vision, numbness or tingling in the feet, feeling tired and dry skin.

How long can someone have diabetes?

It is easy to go unnoticed by the myth that diabetes is related to old age and does not happen to young people. The young mindset is not yet ready to accept that it is susceptible to metabolic disorders like diabetes due to several factors. People up to a certain age do not care about disease, lifestyle that promotes disease or risk factors that increase susceptibility to disease. “HbA1C is the only test that shows whether a person has diabetes,” says Dr. Grover, who explains that the pre-diabetic interval, which is between 5.7 and 6.5, is the interval in which a person may not know they have diabetes. He has diabetes, and the time frame has been stated as 2 – 3 months. Timely medical checkup can help in checking the blood sugar level in the body.
